Sagging Skin? Laser Resurfacing Can Help.

Sagging Skin? Laser Resurfacing Can Help.

Along with fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin is one of the most common visible signs of aging. And sagging skin doesn’t wait until you’ve reached an advanced age to appear — it can start as early as your 30s.

Topical creams and serums can help minimize lines and wrinkles, but they can’t do anything for sagging skin. Although facelift surgery offers dramatic results, many people don’t want to undergo the risk, expense, and recovery time required with cosmetic surgery.

Fortunately, Leslie Forrester, APRN, and the team at Wrinkle Fairy in Chicago, Oakbrook, Arlington Heights, and Naperville, Illinois, have a noninvasive solution: laser skin resurfacing with the LaseMD™ and Fractora® laser systems. Take a moment to learn how this cutting-edge treatment can help you.

Why is my skin sagging?

An amazing protein called collagen exists all over your body, providing support to your bones and internal structures. It also plays a key role in the health of your joints and is the main ingredient found in the structures that protect your internal organs.

Collagen also plays an important role in the health and appearance of your skin. Your skin goes beyond the superficial layer we can all see. It’s made of many layers, and collagen and other cells, like elastin, live in the middle layer where they promote new skin growth.

This important protein keeps your skin healthy and fresh by encouraging the top layer of skin to turn over or regenerate regularly. This process also works to repair any damage and replace dead skin cells, and it’s why your skin moves back into place easily when you’re young.

But collagen production naturally declines as you get older, and even though we can’t run lab tests to check your collagen levels, you can see the difference in the changes it makes to your skin. The decline begins in your 20s and progresses as you age, with a sharp drop once you hit menopause.

As your collagen production declines, your skin loses elasticity, causing it to droop. As a result, the firm tone and smooth texture from your younger years fade over time, leaving you with saggy skin and other signs of aging.

How can laser resurfacing restore my skin?

FDA-approved laser resurfacing helps restore sagging skin by increasing your body’s natural production of collagen. Though both the LaseMD and Fractora laser systems dramatically reduce the visible signs of aging, the advanced fractional radio frequency (RF) technology of Fractora provides one of the most effective ways to tighten saggy skin.

By delivering RF energy into the deeper layers of your skin, Fractora creates localized yet gentle heat and micro-wounds in the targeted areas. As a result, your body's natural production of collagen increases, restructuring your skin and improving its appearance.

There are no needles or injections required, since laser resurfacing is a noninvasive treatment. Because Fractora creates tiny micro-wounds, your skin heals faster compared to other resurfacing techniques. You’re able to leave right away, and recovery time generally takes three to seven days depending on your specific treatment.

Although you’ll notice some improvement during your initial recovery period, your skin will continue to improve over time as your body keeps producing more collagen. After about six weeks, you’ll see the final results.

The best part? By following your post-treatment instructions and taking care of your skin, you can expect your results to last for years to come. Your skin keeps aging, however, so your Wrinkle Fairy provider may recommend products and other treatments to help you keep your younger-looking skin longer.
