The Many Benefits of Chemical Peels

The Many Benefits of Chemical Peels

Your age may only be a number, but when it comes to your skin, your age may show up in the form of spots, lines, wrinkles, and more. No matter how well you care for your skin, at-home products may not be enough to reverse these signs of aging.

At Wrinkle Fairy with offices in Chicago, Oakbrook, Arlington Heights, and Naperville, Illinois, Leslie Forrester, APRN, and our experienced aesthetic team offer different cosmetic treatments to help you combat the visible signs of aging.

Our team customizes your treatments to provide outstanding, natural-looking results. One of the ways we help you beat the hands of time is with non-invasive chemical peels. Take a moment to learn more about these treatments and the many benefits they provide.

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are a type of skin treatment that use chemical solutions to improve the health of the surface of your skin. The special chemicals used in the peel make tiny wounds on your skin.

These superficial wounds are small, but they trigger your body’s natural healing processes. This encourages your body to create and send more collagen, a naturally occurring protein, to the treatment area.

As a result, chemical peels increase collagen production to your face. This helps create fresh, new skin cells and improves the tone and texture of the skin on your face. At the same time, chemical peels cause the old top layer to peel away, revealing fresh new skin.

What are the benefits of chemical peels?

Chemical peels remove old skin cells, allowing healthy, new skin to take center stage. This aesthetic treatment gives you dramatic results — without the need for surgery or other invasive treatments.

Some of the many benefits you can expect after a chemical peel include:

Another benefit of chemical peel treatments is that they only take a little time — typically 30-60 minutes. You’ll be able to go home right after your treatment, and you don’t have long to wait to enjoy your results.

About 3 days after treatment, your skin will start to flake and peel away. It usually takes about 3-4 days for the flaking and peeling to finish, and then one week after treatment, you’ll see noticeable results.

The best part is that since chemical peels use your body’s healing process, your results keep improving over the weeks that follow!

Are all chemical peels the same?

Different chemical peels can be used to address different skin types and skin concerns. The experienced aesthetic team at Wrinkle Fairy helps you select the right type of peel using your skin’s condition and the results you want to see as a guide.

Generally speaking, chemical peels fall into one of three basic types, and each of these types has different effects and different recovery times. Here is a quick overview:

Superficial or light-level peels

Superficial peels use mild acids and typically can correct mild discoloration as they penetrate the top layer of your skin. Patients can expect to experience light redness, which usually goes away within a day.

Medium-level peels

Medium-level peels penetrate both the outer and middle layers of your skin. These types of peels can be used to reduce the appearance of imperfections, like age spots and wrinkles, and usually require up to five days of downtime.

Deep peels

Deep chemical peels penetrate down into the middle layers of your skin and remove damaged skin cells. This level of peel provides more dramatic results, but they require bandaging and at-home downtime for 10-14 days.

Depending on your goals, the team at Wrinkle Fairy may also recommend additional aesthetic services to rejuvenate your appearance, such as Botox, facial fillers, laser resurfacing, and more.
